BiCSL — Bitbang Computer Science Lab

About the lab

Bitbang Computer Science Lab

BiCSL studies computers from the bottom up: where signals become bits, and bits become systems. We build it, measure it, then explain it.

Our mission

The name says it: bit-banging is the art of driving hardware one bit at a time, in software, with nothing hidden. That is how we like to approach research — understand every layer, then build something better.

BiCSL is an independent research group in the Republic of Korea. We study computer architecture, hardware and side-channel security, AI security and programming languages, and we release our work so others can check it.

01

Build real systems

We prototype on real hardware and real workloads. If it doesn't run, it doesn't count.

02

Measure honestly

Every claim comes with an artifact and a reproducible benchmark that others can rerun.

03

Open by default

Papers, code and datasets are released in our repository with permissive licenses whenever possible.

04

Grow people

Students lead their own projects, present early and often, and learn to write and review well.

Research areas

Four threads that run through most of our projects.

01

Computer Architecture

Data flow, parallel hardware and the von Neumann bottleneck, tested on boards we build and measure ourselves.

02

Hardware & Side-Channel Security

What leaks through physical signals, and how to draw trustworthy randomness from physical noise.

03

AI Security

How machine-learning systems fail when their training data or their agents cannot be trusted.

04

Programming Languages

Language design and compilers, from the lexer down to code generation.

Join us

Come build systems with us.

We are not actively recruiting right now, but we are always happy to hear from motivated students.

Who should reach out?

Anyone who enjoys understanding how computers work end to end. Experience with C, Rust or hardware is a plus, but curiosity and persistence matter most.

How do I get in touch?

Reach us through contact@bicsl.kro.kr and tell us which research area interests you and why. Links to things you've built are very welcome.
